entire article from Detroit News: http://www.detnews.com/apps/pb cs.dll/article?AID=/20070405/M ETRO/704050374 Census: 9-county area is 12th-largest metro market Metro Detroit, a Top 10 market for decades, has slipped yet another notch as the continued national migration to sunnier climes pumps thousands of people into southern and southwestern cities. Census data released this morning shows that the nine-county region is now the 12th-largest metro area, passed in the last year by Atlanta. Miami had moved past the year before. |

That article was 14 paragraphs of denial. Detroit was the only metro in the top 15 to lose population, despite not being the only cold-weather metro on the list. |

Denial for sure. My favorite lines... "Still, the region has obstacles: A faltering economy, an expected decline in the domestic auto industry..." Yeah, no way anyone saw that coming the past few years. "We'll be fine," she said. Jerry Herron, a professor of English and American studies at Wayne State University Head in sand, pretend nothing is wrong or that drastic changes need to be made in the psyche of the region. Stuff of tragic beauty. |

I've been reading an excellent book right now called the City in Mind. The author analyzes cities from across the world. He also review three American cities, Boston, Atlanta, and Las Vegas. Boston the old northern city, declining population, loss of factory jobs. Atlanta, the booming capital of the sun belt. Las Vegas, the fastest growing city in America, strong economy. Which one does he predict to survive? Boston. Boston has an excellent infastructure, parks, schools, public transportation, and water. Atlanta has become nothing more than a land of horrible sprawl, with the lowest metro area population density in North America. Atlanta's inner core and south and west sides have been left to rot. The infastructure that was barely set up has and is collapsing. Atlanta is known as an edge city. He predicts that its largely transient workforce will move as things continue to decline. Las Vegas just doesn't have what it needs to sustain itself. Las Vegas will run out of water between 2009 and 2013, run out of water if they continue to grow at that rate. He does not predict Las Vegas to survive much longer either. He also branded it the worst place on earth. This book brings me quite a lot of hope. The author is James Howard Kuntsler, he is funny and smart. He has a good point in his book "just because it is growing fast, that must meen its a wonderful place." He right, as most of the fast growing places are shitholes. Detroit has a future, stick in there guys. Things will be good in the long run. Hey if global warming continues, Washington, New Orleans, Miami, Houston. All are going to be under water in 50 years. Who can live in a sunken city? |

Are you guys that this is the first year increment (2005-2006) that Metro Detroit has lost population and still managing to post growth since 2000? Metro Pittsburgh and Cleveland have actually been the only two major metros to post losses since 2000. Actually, I believe Metro Pittsburg and Cleveland have actually posted losses since even back into the 90's. This slight population drop is news, and shows a back peddle, but I'd hardly call the article denial. (Message edited by lmichigan on April 07, 2007) |

So, what is the rate of current subsidence of those four cities relative to sea level due to global warming? If you don't have a quantitative handle on this figure, you have absolutely NO basis for making ANY time predictions. So, what is the rate, genius? I'd wager that you have zip, nada, zilch, nichts information on that. A damn sure bet... |

You can read the whole goddamn UN global warming report that just came out dumbass. Here's an article explaining what they said and what is likely to happen. The scientists who did the report found that their predictions had a 9 in 10 chance of happening. http://www.smh.com.au/news/env ironment/un-global-warming-rep ort-indicts-humans/2007/04/05/ 1175366413152.html http://www.npr.org/templates/s tory/story.php?storyId=9398924 Or is this lefty bullshit to you?
