All this talk about union vs. non-union car makers and foreign vs. domestic has me wondering...what do you drive? Me? 2000 Jeep Cherokee and a 1999 Voyager van. Both have over 100K miles (the van is pushing 200K) and both run fine and look good. Also a 1988 Corvette with 67K for summer fun. (Message edited by wash_man on April 03, 2007) |

1995 Dodge Dakota 118K miles (for the last 30K miles the doors haven't been able to lock) 2002 Dodge Caravan 68K Miles Wifes car I don't think I will buy another Dodge for a while since they get stolen so often. Somebody wiped the snow off of my dakota window and must have said "I don't want the heap" so they walked over to my Caravan and took that. We got it back, but I always wonder if it will be there when I park it somewhere. When I sent a question to Ask Dr. Z asking what they are doing to make them harder to steal, I got a note back that said we are not answering that type of question but you can look it up in your local library. I don't know what I am going to get next. |

2001 Ford Explorer Sport built in Kentucky. Plan on leasing or buying an 08 Mustang by the end of this year or next spring. Previously had a 93 Escort GT built in Flat Rock. Parents have 94 Ford Ranger and a 06 Mercury Montego. Two classic cars too. 63 1/2 Ford Galaxie 500 built at Wayne and a 65 Thunderbird built in Wixom. Brother works at VW...his cars rotate due to having company cars. He does have a 89 Mustang 5.0. First car he ever bought. We are, for the most part, a Ford family. Dad worked for Ford for 35+ years. Having papers helps when buying cars. |

95 grand am quad 4 160,000 (timing chains still going strong). Jjaba- Not many people know about that one. impressive. Somehow they can build the engine in china, ocean freight 'em to Vancouver, Then railroad them to somewhere to in ontario and still save money???!!! I beleive that is where the final assembly is but I'm not 100%. |

"We have one, or was that your point to justify the need for what we all ready have?" "Urbanize: It's on the Detroit forum because it is about cars. Detroit=Motown=Cars." That's the dumbest reason I've ever heard. This proves how much the site has fallen also. If we have a section designated for this, the why not put it on there. Also, what you did what your equation proved that this was a Detroit CONNECTION. It has nothing really to do with Detroit proper. People drive these vehicles everywhere. |

Beavis #505, yes, Shanghi to Vancouer for Chevy Equnox engines. Then, RR to Ontario for assembly. GM Shanghi is part of the Chinese GM strategy which has made Buick Regal one of the most popular Chinese cars. Yes, the Louisville, Ky Ford truck plant is an old workshorse with good products. They even had orders for the Edsel, good car but lousy sales. So bad were sales, the Edsel story is a textbook in business schools of how to fail in the car industry. jjaba. |

jjaba- no you know if they shipped the american tooling to china or did they just make new stuff there? If so what happened to the plants building the 3400/3500cc. The reason I ask is the basic architecture goes back to the '82or'84? 2.8l 60 degree v-6. The engine is has been virtually unchanged since '89. That was the year they bumped it up to 3.1l,gave it a balance shaft and port-fuel injection. |

56packman, and anyone else with a 94-2005 buick, pontiac,or olds with a 3800 series II- Beware! Due to a complicated plastic intake, The engine is prone to failure via coolant in the oil. The plastic intake warps and sends coolant into the cylinders and into the crank case. Then the rod knock comes. If you see leaking or have the slightest bit of coolant in the oil get a new intake and gasket soon. THIS DOES NOT APPLY TO SUPERCHARGED MOTORS OR 2005 GRAND PRIXS. |

Sknutson: That's a different club. Most AMC clubs are 1958 and later, the year the merged companies dropped the Hudson / Nash Names and went forwards with one name. There is a AMC Rambler Club out of OH. I did not care too much for our local AMC club, it was more of a Javelin AMX only club. People with Ambassadors, Matadors or Hornets did not get much love. |

The gasket failure problem is with the GM 3.4 L V-6 engine, not with the 3800 engine. My advice learned the hard way on my 2000 Olds Alero: "watchful waiting" is not the thing to do if you have one of these engines. As soon as your mechanic notices that it is leaking, don't wait - get a new gasket installed ASAP. Wait too long and you'll hear the rods knocking, which is a much more costly repair. |

Beavis1981, jjaba doesn't know how they make the Chinese engines, American tooling or from elsewhere. We do know that those Chinese GM plants punch out a lot of product for the World market. Much of the product is badged Suzuki and Buick. GM is opening addl. plants playing the China card. Just after Nixon "opened" China, US manufacturers were scheming on how to serve a Billion people with consumer goods. As we now know, it didn't quite work out that way. China exports like crazy and America ships them raw materials. We're the banana republic after all is said and done. The good news is that the Chinese are not reduced to driving Soviet crap anymore 'cause there ain't any Soviet Union. jjaba. |

mikeg- I have proof in my drive way. My dad bought a 95 sse for $600 becase of the rod knock. I am referring to failure by warping not gasket failure. In fact the 3.8l failure is so common junkyards refer to good engines as "dry ones" |

A reckless driver did me a favor and ran into the back of my 2001 Toyota Corrola Ce. State Farm totalled the car-paid off the $3900 owed and cut me a check which I used to purchase a 90 Buick Riviera with low miles so now I don't have a car payment and only carry no fault. It is a comfortable ride but lots of little things are messing up on the car. Had some electrical problems. 6 cylinder. |

1st to current 1982 Ford EXP built in Canada (still have) 1989 Escort 1988 Ford Escort EXP (Wayne, MI) 2001 Saturn SC2 (Springhill, TN..still have this one, too) 1995 Chevy Astro (Baltimore, MD) I also drove these while learning to drive thru Michigan Graduated licenseing: 86 Thunderbird Turbo Coupe (I miss this car a lot, it was totaled by a guy who blew a yield sign and hit me) 87 Pontiac Sunbird Wagon (what a piece of Junk lol) 84 LTD Crown Victoria (we called her the Beast lol) Personally. I thing that GM's Vehicles are really boring looking for the most part, with the exception of the 2 Kappa based cars. Fords aren't that much better. I think Chrysler has the best looking cars these days. |
