It was Mardi Gras for pyromaniacs and fire fighting enthusiasts, who used to come to Detroit for the event. It was one of the few sources of Detroit tourism going on in the 80's

Fires were everywhere in the city! I worked at 8 and a half and Hoover and we used to go up on the top of the building to watch the fires. There was no one place. All the city had fires. and Yes 26 is too young to start feeling old so...STOP IT! LOL

The way I understand it, the citizen volunteers and police helicopters have cut the numbers of fires a lot on halloween night. So now the fires are being set a week or two before and after halloween. DFD is still getting beat half to death during the halloween season. don't know how they do it!
