There was a short period last night while I was at the Tiger game where it seemed like there was a lot of smoke in the air, and it smelled as though someone were throwing logs on the fireplace. Maybe around 8pm-ish? Never heard any sirens.

Walked up to the upper level to check it out. It looked like it was coming from I-75 and Mack area.

Whatever it was it was big and burning orange for a while there.

Not a whole lot there. Maybe a junkyard. You would have smelled it if it was Louie's Corned Beef burning.

Then it must have been huge, the people up there before us could see flames.

Probably an old building. It was the smell of old burning wood.

It seemed like it was somewhere in the Brush Park side of I-75, I passed through the smoke around 8:30ish. Seemed like it was west of 75, south of Mack...where people live.

Perhaps Detroitnerd ought to look at wwww.local.live.com. There is actually a whole lot in that immediate area, you know things like a hospice, a school, lots of housing, and oh yeah the start of theat DMC thingy.

I dunno Skulker, I could have sworn that it was from a couple blocks behind that McDonalds on the East side of 75.

But I might have been drinking, so who knows.

There was a fire around that time in the area of Chene and Ferry. Two dwellings. There was also a giant four-flat going near Concord and Canfield.

FFDFD, is right the smoke was from those fires on Ferry & Chene Area. I was at the game and we also smelled it you could tell that it was a dwelling or building fire by the smell.....

Y'all sure that there wasn't just a larger than usual group of people lighting up outside of the designated smoking section?

As I have stated in some previous post, the Chene-Ferry area is a tinderbox:

Sometimes I see these old abandoned, burnt-out houses and think, "We don't need no water let the motherfu---r burn!"

Seriously there should a statue of limitations for how long an abandoned building sits and if it catches fire how much the fire department should do to put out the fire. Kind of like a do not resuscitate order for an elder person, but for a house. Maybe those red dots are good indications....

Bulletmagnet Thanks for those pics. Why the sam hell is the owners of those properties not made to tear down those burned out homes! I just cannot get over that in Detroit! WTF!! The city should give notice to the owner then start taking/confiscating for pay the property and tearing the shit down! I know there are burned out buildings all over detroit! MAYOR'S OFFICE/CITY COUNCIL! GET WITH THE PROGRAM AND START MAKING THESE HOME/BUILDING OWNERS ACCOUNTABLE! They have to know how bad that looks on Detroit! How many burned out buildings are torn down every day by the city? Anyone got any stats? Can the city just not keep up or have they just become that complacent? That is something you really dont see in most other cities! I just dont get it!

Heh, sorry urbanize. I wouldn't want to jinx that place, lest I have some beefy pastrami-fed toughs grinding me into chipped beef.

After Katz's, though, their pastrami sandwiches seem puny.

Exmotowner, the buildings are burning at an astounding rate in this area. Many of them do get torn down, it takes time and money:

Adam: Firefighters normally do everything they can to put out a fire as quickly as possible to prevent it from spreading. Firefighters usually don't let it burn unless the fire is so out of control that the only way they can extinguish said fire is by letting it burn itself out. It's also much easier to get rid of any residual hot spots in a partially burned building than one that is nothing more than a bunch of coals. It's not uncommon or terribly difficult for extinguished fires to rekindle, forcing firefighters to go back out and soak it again or cause even more damage.

Hey Dnerd, interestingly, 15-20 years ago years ago that part of manhattan was as empty as many parts of the D. NYC very aggressively and innovatively brought those back.

Bullet, this is the picture you need to retake from this same angle and from the front of it where you can get closer. This is almost across from that Lot that is for sale on St Aubin. This view is gone now, burned almost to the ground. There is another one around the corner from here that is collapsing in on itself that should go up in flames soon too. I was shocked at how many houses were burned in this area.

Mich: Those pastramis are the best there. And they used to do the thick-cut french fries in lard. Mmmmm.

As for New York bringing back Ludlow Street, eh, whatevs. I'm not too sympathetic for all that, as the rents went up and soon I had to add cab fare to that pastrami price tag. (No way I'll walk to the subway after downing one of those bombs.)

I learned that way after they kept blocking off the entrance to 94 east of Woodward. No warning or anything and it would be closed. Last weekend I saw it was burned out after taking my wife for a drive around Brush Park to see what was happening there.
