"Zug Island Coke Ovens"
acrylic / canvas
*MicroPointillist
40 x 22 inches
100 x 55 CM

$4200

Notes: This painting is based on the memory of my first job in Detroit, working nights at the coke ovens of Zug Island, an industrial island along the Detroit River. After baking for 24 hours, coke was disgorged into a hopper car.

The effect was a magical explosion of light and sound that painted the grim surroundings orange.

After the coke was doused with water to cool, the hopper car returned, dumping the still steaming coke onto an inclined plane as it rolled along. My job was to open gates to allow it to fall evenly onto a conveyor belt.

*Yellow, red and blue - only colors used.
