"Daybreak" was commissioned by the Michigan Gallery and created by Lowell Boileau in September 1987. Located on the side of a building adjacent to the gallery, at Michigan Avenue and 21st Street in Detroit, it was painted over for a commercial sign in the late 1990's.
Members of the Gallery assisted the artist by filling larger areas in paint-by-number fashion while the artist tied together the details. In the image below, the signatures of the participating members appear with the artist's in the bottom panel to the right below the words Michigan Gallery.
