I would argue the large hole in the back points to the building not spontaneously collapsing. I would argue that the city should begin to fine and take action against land owners who neglect properties. Until the city begins to take action more of this will happen. |

You can see the building as it was on StreetView. http://tinyurl.com/63meqc The street wall looks pretty well intact. It's a shame to have a hole in that wall. |

drive down three mile in 48224, there are people right now, tearing crap out of homes and the citizens or cops don't do a thing about it. I would shot them myself but I would go to jail. |

what if Broderick collapsed - you think that might cause people to get a bit more concerned with these buildings? the constant shift of temperature and moisture cannot be good for a structure that is sitting open unheated. |

The whole from came from people breaking into the broderick and throwing things from the roof off. The hole was created over 2 years ago from part of the equipment on the roof. To my knowledge, which is not reliable since I no longer bartend at the Broderick, Mike Higgins owns the building that collapsed. He may have sold it since then. |

It was demolished.... there was an excavator there the other day 'scooping' away at it... (Message edited by motorcitydave on November 10, 2008) |

Wait, so it collapsed or it was demo'd? Motorcitydave seems to make this sound a lot less of a big deal than it is being made out to be. |

Guys, it collapsed. Trust me. I saw it on Saturday morning, half of the building laying on the sidewalk and no construction crew in sight. Construction crews came in later in the day and were cleaning it up while that huge crowd of 12,000 was filing out of Ford Field after the WMU/Illinois game. |

New Orleans has a custom of partying in anticipation of a hurricane and partying while returning from a funeral. The idea is to transcend tragedy. Maybe Detroit could form a similar custom: Celebrate natural forces overtaking obsolescence to make room for progress. It's like nature saying "I don't care whether you think it's hopeless. You'll find yourself in a place where the only thing left for you to do is heal and grow. Live with it. Enjoy." |

Well now there's a nice little plot to build a modernistic entrance atrium for the future Broderick Tower condos facing Lower Woodward. It is duly noted that Higgins owns this property. |

Amgasper01, that could be correct, I can see it from my apartment window, and I noticed the excavator digging at it. Mackinaw, I actually thought it would help if this little building was gone (collapse or demo aside), it would make a nice spot for a dumpster at the bottom of a garbage chute, and let the renovation of the tower begin. |

Yeah, may be Bleu is in on it... ...speaking of Bleu, I wonder how the opening of the Italian Bistro in the old Madison Theater is cutting into their valet parking options, the valets from Bleu used to have cars parked up to, and ON to the sidewalks around there some nights... looked like hell. |

I believe that building was a Church's for awhile. I vaguely remember it in the late '60s - early '70s as being an extra size shoe store. Tall-eze, maybe? Wish I could find some pictures of that part of Woodward in the 60s or 70s. Shame about the building though. Kinda liked that oh-so-early 60s roof line. |

No it didnt share a basement. Ive been in that one, twas several fast food joints in the past. Basement was nothing of note, back door opened in alley next to Broderick freight elevator. We used to climb on that roof to get in Broderick. |

Just drove by it. Frankly, it looks like it was demolished, not fell down, to the not-in-the-know casual observer. I would like to think it'll be out before the parade, but I doubt it if they've not started on it yet. |

What a blessing. Like Retroit said, it saves on demo. And hey if there were to be a new parking lot, more tax dollars. I may sound a little callous, but hey it's for the best. |

If there is a demand for parking lots, that is a good sign. It means more people are venturing downtown, and full parking lots make the place look popular. |
