Depends on the drink. That is typical for a grade a little above well but people may have been going a little upscale with the environment and the event.

Of course Kid Rock may have been drinking Bud Light.

^that's not to say you can't find ridiculously inflated prices anywhere you go, including in Detroit...

but that doesn't change the fact that most places in the area charge between $4-6 for mixed drinks

I'm not a big fan of Kid Rock's mucic but he seems like a pretty good guy. A few years ago while he was in a Memphis restaurant he picked up the check for a pretty large group of high school kids on their prom night. Recently when an area high school golf team had all their equipment stolen he bought them top of the line clubs and bags.

^Well the clientele that a place like V will be shooting for is the type that they will charge $11 for a mixed drink. The average hot spot in Detroit or anywhere else will have little to nothing on the menu in the $4-6 range.

Two of my friends and I went to the opening of the new MGM Casino last night. I have to tell you that I was incredibly impressed. From the mosaic tiles on the walls to the subtle lighting on pieces of art, no detail was overlooked.

We spent a majority of our time at V, the night club. The bass pulsated your body while the light show treated your eyes. As if the excellent music wasn’t enough to make you want to get up and dance (and yes, they played a great selection of music), the gyrating go-go dancers throughout the night club encouraged you to dance.

All in all, we had a wonderful evening. Visiting the casino was like taking a mini-vacation. I think the other two casinos have something to worry about.

PS, a rum and diet Coke at V is $7.

By any chance was the $11 drink at Elysium the "World's Manliest Martini" ?

Not sure about the brand of rum. I did not specify. Could have been well or Bacardi clear. Regardless, it was a pretty strong drink.

Patrons wowed by MGM Grand's smooth opening, all the glitz

Enjoying a breakfast of French toast with candied pecans and marinated raisins, $13, and a French omelet with smoked ham and Gruyere, $12, at Wolfgang Puck Grille, Maria and Bill Gardner of Livonia gave it all a big thumbs-up. They were thrilled to wave at celebrity chef Wolfgang Puck, who passed by their table.

"This is more than we expected -- the shops, the restaurants, everything," Maria Gardner said. "This is just not what you're used to seeing in the city."

I stick by my statement that if you are paying 10 bucks for a drink you are an idiot. You can get the same drink at "The Well" or many other downtown bars in the 4 to 6 buck range. People who pay these exhorbinant prices deserve to be slapped upside their heads.

Tips to clubbing on a budget:

1. Pre-drink at a cheap bar, or at home (but please, don't drink and drive).
2. Use the money you save to buy a round for the ladies at the club.

Man I have to say I was extremely impressed with MGM Grand. It actually turned out to be better than what I initially thought that it would.

BTW, V is a nice little spot to hang out at if you are not into the gambling scene as well and Ignite...

I agree with you D_Stylin. It's going to be hard when MGM spent 3-4 times as much as MotorCity and Greektown.

Hopefully Greektown owners will use its theme to its advantage like Caesars Entertainment has.

Has anyone been to MotorCity lately? Have they updated more of the casino on the interior? The new addition is nice, but when you leave the new addition it just doesn't feel the same.

Thought you all might like to know that news of the MGM Grand's opening was on the radio this morning in Madison Wisconsin. This place is being billed as THE premier entertainment center in the Midwest.

There is also a somewhat snobby article about in the Chicago Tribune.

(speaking as a chicagoland native)

first, i don't want to get crap from the trib, so i can't read the article
second, chicago has an extreme inferiority complex vis-a-vis new york. chicagoans try to tear down anything good that happens in other cities, and the chicago media are especially harsh when it threatens their vaunted conference/exposition industry. there is only one appropriate response when Chicagoans spout off: "at least we aren't trying to be New York, Jr."

there were big protests there a few years (i'm just realizing that it might have been more than ten! i'm getting old) ago when chicago mag decided pizza papalis could stand up to the best chicago had to offer

Ok, I was not Kid Rock's waitress, as I am a man. My girlfriend was, however. There is nothing wrong with tipping a dollar a drink. For me, you, and Joe Public. Really, I love it, and it pays my bills.

When you are a V.I.P. and expecting V.I.P. treatment, you should take care of your waitress. She doesn't care about your last album, she only cares about your tip. When you tip like everyone else, you get treated like everyone else. Not treated poorly, but your drinks wont be run right out to you just because you dated Pam Anderson.

Just went over there at lunchtime today. Traffic jams aside, we didn't have a hard time finding open slot machines of any denomination. The gaming floor wasn't nearly as packed as we'd expected. That was cool. What was not cool was that most of the betting slip cash-out machines were not working, and there were long lines at the ones that did. They'd better fix that pronto or there's gonna be some pissed-off patrons.
Place looks awesome, though.

"Recently when an area high school golf team had all their equipment stolen he bought them top of the line clubs and bags. "

A little off topic but...Kid Rock didn't BUY those golf clubs. He used is influence to get a golf club company to donate them.

"Rock talked to pro golfer John Daly, who suggested calling TaylorMade Golf, the Detroit Free Press and The Ann Arbor News reported Thursday. TaylorMade agreed to send the clubs by the end of the week." (AP)

Here's a few of the more colorful comments

"Add some palm trees, sand and a lot of showgirls and wow it would replace Las Vegas. Yeah in your dreams! It's still in Detroit. Yuck."

"I am disappointed that the casino is located in Detroit. It would have been far better to place it in a nice suburb like Grosse Pointe or Bloomfield Hills."

"Lets see ,hey honey lets go out to Detroit tonite . we can get car jacked , robbed . and shot all in one nite . had a great time!"

"I think the Casino/Hotel is fantastic! The AFL-CIO trades did a fantastic job. Spectacular architecture and smart decor. However it is only perfume on a pig. The pig is D, a place nobody will ever want to visit from out of town. Let's face it, we can build all the Casino's we can, but the D will never become vacation destination of choice. It will continue to be the Pig of all major cities."

Yeah sure Stylin' I'll let you know. Its looking 50/50 right now as a friend is throwing a "stripper party" Saturday night, which when I think about it is more like 80/20 I stay here, but if I do go I'll definitely let you know. Do you have email?

Rb, I notice that with Chicago people as well. Insecure as hell especially when New York or LA is brought up. No matter what they feel it is their duty to inform everyone that they are from Chicago and how cool Chicago is compared to the rest of the world. And its not just Northside people either its all of them, if their not comparing how nice the downtown is then they are comparing how hood it is. Eghh I wish MSU would stop admitting them.

went to mgm friday night for our second visit.
i want to post about the good and the bad points about the visits.
Good stuff:
great looking place inside, its got the vegas feel in the atmosphere.
people seem to be enjoying and having a good time there.
cleveland people cheering when the indians beat new york in baseball.
long line to get in the nightclub "v" with the "clubber" chicks in mini skirts.
all the bars are really 'super cool".
jesse palter playing in the int ice bar.
The bad stuff:
parking deck from hell
elevators from deck to casino - too long of a wait.
elevators from casino back to parking deck.
long lines at cash out terminals- more than half not working- people getting pissed!
slot machines with no sounds. the best part of the fun slot machines is the sound of them especially when losing money.
food court not big enough. long lines and not enough seats to eat. real bummer.
bathrooms are waay too small. men only have 4 urinals and 4 stalls per bathroom. lines to go pee. felt like being in joe louis arena. this must be addressed soon.
i will still give the casino an "A" as detroit really needs this place as a destination spot for out of towners. but as for me the hassles to get in the place and the elevator waits are too much at this time to really want to go back any time soon.

I also had my second visit last night. And yes, I'm sure the parking decks and traffic were hellish, I'm sure it will get better as the hype dies down a bit.

We went there for dinner last night. Thanks to a friend not showing up at our house until extremely late, we didn't actually get inside the casino until about 10:15.

We wanted to try one of the signature restaurants but they were pretty much booked for the rest of the evening. Slightly disappointing.

So we went to the "tapas" buffet instead. Pretty long line for that too, but it moved rather quickly. The food was pretty good but I hardly understood how this was considered a tapas place when heffers were walking away with mounds of crab legs.

My only gripe about the restaurant was they did not have any restrooms inside the actual restaurant. You had to leave the restaurant and use one on the gaming floor. Not good.

Despite the fancy name, did the Pallet Dinning Studio still resemble a traditional buffet? How much is it and, now that they have hotel guests to feed, will they be serving breakfast?

Well, it certainly doesn't resemble an Old Country Buffet in the fact that everything is freshly prepared right in front of you.

There are five or six different stations. An asian stir fry station, a seafood station, American grill, soups and salads, and desserts.

So let's say you wander over to the American grill station to get some beef tenderloin. At that time, cooks are busy preparing the various choices in front of you... braising lambchops, grilling chicken, etc. No people bringing out large chafing dishes from the kitchen.

The price for dinner $26. Don't know what lunch pricing is or whether or not they have breakfast.

My buddy who deals Black Jack at MotorCity said that he didn't notice any drop in MotorCity attendence on Tuesday or since. Maybe the folks who didn't want to go thru the hassle of the traffic and long lines at MGM decided to go back to the other 2 casinos.

Having dated Pam Anderson is far from an exclusive club. ;-)

Rick Solomon is the latest. (there is a real story there from Pam's TV interview).

BTW, seriously, what is happening with the DTE steetscaping? (When I was in DET over Labor Day I drove by and didn't notice anything exciting).

DTE's idea of streetscaping is erecting iron fences and hiding them with a multitude of bushes.

I had to be D/T for work on "Opening Day" so I decided to stroll over there after work.

I have to say it is very nice. Better then I expected. I did not eat or even play, just walked around taking it all in.

Parking looked like a nightmare as traffic was backed up for blocks. Luckily I left my vehicle at the office and walked over.

I just came back from Vegas 2 weeks ago, so that was fresh in my mind and I would have to say MGM is right up there in quality (At least by looks alone).

holy cow...the elevator situation is horrible....

we had to wait 4 minutes for one to come to level 3 where we parked, and when it opened, it was too full for us to even get on...

so we had to wait another 2 minutes for another one...

wish I had known where the stairs were....
