East Catholic Elementary (formerly St. Jude) is the only "truly" east side Catholic school in Detroit. St. Bartholomew is also still open; that's more "north side", though.

Nearby-suburb east side Catholic schools, besides St. Clare, include St. Paul on the Lake (Grosse Pointe), Our Lady Star of the Sea (Grosse Pointe Woods), St. Joan of Arc (St. Clair Shores) and St. Clement (Center Line).

With St. Ambrose Parish still open, I would suggest calling their rectory as they may have copies somewhere in storage. Same thing with Our Lady Queen of Peace, at the very least, they may be able to get into the HS library if copies exist there.

As for St. Phillip Neri, those are probably the way of ebay or used book store at this point. I think that Neri may have also been closed before 73.

Yes, St. Phillip closed in l969-so I imagine you'd have to go the Ebay route or else check at the Archdiocese's schools office.

Swiburn:
"Does anyone know what happened to Benedictine? It was on the west side, and I'm thinking it became St. Martin de Porres H.S., but maybe not."

Visitation became St. Martin de Porres H.S. back in 1967-'68.

Kellyroad,

Thanks for letting me hear those bells again. They could be heard all the way to McCormick and Landsdown.

To The_ed: I looked on my Catholic football team chart, but couldn't find Benedictine.
The east side Detroit schools seemed to have more historical coverage.

Benedictine closed after the 2004-05 school year. I am unsure if the building is currently occupied.

Thanks, Max. If anybody has any information on Benedictine, i.e. year opened, did it replace an existing Catholic school, etc., I'd be happy to hear about it.

sad about notre dame. Fr. bryson had run the teen dances in the 60's which reportedly attracted big name local entertainers. then he revived the dances in the 70's and brought in the various remnant bands of the MC5, inclucing sonic's rendez-vous band, and other hard rock bands from that era like salem witchcraft. he wore ray-bans and liked to call everyone "hollywood." quite a character.

Does anybody know how the Catholic high school planned for Holy Redeemer parish is working out? I recall an arrangement where students have to work to pay the tuition.

Thanks, l4and Hayes. I hope the Cristo Rey school does very well-I hate the lousy charter schools taking away from the Catholic ones.
I know the charters are free, but their test scores are usually bad.

Thanks, Max. Is St. Louis the King closed? The school closed in l988. It looks like the school cornerstone is a makeshift one-the church had an elaborate carved one installed when the church was dedicated.
St. Augustine: It closed in l989. They had a high school in the l950s.
Transfiguration- are they open? the school closed in 2005.
St. Agnes- the h.s. closed in l967, the grade school in l971.

St. Louis the King church is still open with masses in English and Polish. Likewise is Transfiguration. It looks like a great church and great complex.

Interesting thing about St. Augustine, the building pictured had a cornerstone of 1962. At some point they decided a new building was in order.

As for St. Agnes, did Martyrs of Uganda use the church/school for educational purposed before their closure. In one of the pictures, you see a sign advertising a school. Martyrs closed in 2006.

Max-I don't think Martyrs of Uganda had a school. Maybe there was a charter school there?
It will be interesting, in a depressing sort of way, to see what Detroit Catholic schools will close in June, 2008

Swiburn, I thought they did - I always enjoyed hearing the name whenever the news stations announced school closings - them and St. Cunegunda.

Can't remember where I saw recently that vandals had been inside St. Agnes and where trying to steal copper. It also appears that an adventurist is posting inside St. Agnes on youtube as well:

St. Jude Elementary (renamed East Catholic Elementary in 2004) is now history:

The only other Catholic school closing for 2008 that I'm aware of is St. Mary of Redford:
